What is Sulphur Testing?

Sulphur testing is used to confirm that fuel being used by vessels does not exceed the maximum allowed sulphur content as stipulated by the International Convention for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships (MARPOL).

The International Convention for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships (MARPOL)is an international convention that places responsibilities on companies and ship owners to prevent and contain pollution from their vessels, whether from regular operation or from accidental causes.

What happens during a Sulphur Test?

Our BOHS qualified Hazardous Material Surveyors and Analysts take spot samples of your fuel to ensure that MARPOL regulations, promoted by the IMO (International Marine Organisation) are strictly adhered to.

All samples will be sent to a specialist laboratory for testing in accordance with ISO and BS EN methods and the verification of sulphur content will be reported to you in accordance with Appendix VI of MARPOL. The full process from taking the sample to providing an analysis report can take just three days, depending on the vessel’s location. Meaning that compliance is confirmed as soon as possible.

What are my responsibilities?

Under the MARPOL international convention, until 31 December 2019, ships operating outside Emission Control Areas, the limit for sulphur content of ships’ fuel oil on board with a sulphur content of no more than 0.50% m/m, against the current limit of 3.50%.
