Asbestos on vessels, offshore platforms and onshore sites

Asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) can be found in a large number of vessels, offshore platforms and other marine assets. ACMs present many safety and compliance challenges for maritime operators, particularly when carrying out refurbishment or decommissioning works. Our Consultants have extensive experience of working in the Marine sector and can assist you in managing asbestos effectively and in-line with international regulatory requirements.

What are the Asbestos on Ships Regulations?

Under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), ships built prior to 1st July 2002 that contain asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) must effectively manage their asbestos.

Under the SOLAS chapter 2-1 amendment in December 2000, ships built between 1st July 2002 and 1st January 2011 are prohibited from installing new ACMs except for:

  • Certain rotary vanes
  • Watertight joints and linings
  • Flexible thermal insulation assemblies

Under the SOLAS (resolution MSC.282(86) amendment 2009, ships built after 1st January 2011 are prohibited from the installation of ACMs with no exceptions.
