Case Study
Ship Recycling Consultancy & Ship Recycling Plans

One of the world’s leading ship management and maritime services providers approached Lucion Marine in 2015 to provide Ship Recycling Consultancy services for a ship docked in a Spanish port that was marked for retiring and recycling.

In accordance with the 2011 Guidelines for the Development of the Ship Recycling Plan under the Hong Kong Convention and the EU Ship Recycling Regulations, ships require a Ship Recycling Plan carried out before they are recycled to ensure they do not pose any risks to the health, safety or the environment during the recycling process.

With extensive experience in delivering ship recycling consultancy services, our team of Marine Experts provided advice and guidance on the preparation of the vessel for recycling and supported the sale process to the international market to ensure compliance.

Challenges

To deliver a comprehensive Ship Recycling Plan, all aspects of a ship’s design, construction, operation and refurbishment history must be carefully considered and taken into account. This requires the collation of build, installation and maintenance records for full visibility of building materials and substances present onboard.

An inventory of hazardous materials (IHM) survey, should also be carried out prior to completing the plan to ensure that all potentially hazardous materials (asbestos, PCBs, ODS etc.) are identified and managed through remediation as appropriate.

The Solution

Working from our offices in the UK, our team of Marine Experts assisted the client in preparing information and documentation for the plan based on guidance and requirements to ensure suitability and compliance.

We also provided inspection and testing services for the identification of hazardous materials (IHM) survey and supported the client to manage all associated remediation works required as part of the process to ensure the vessel was fit for recycling and compliant with guidance and regulations.

With the support from our Marine Experts meant that the client was able to receive the International Ready for Recycling Certificate and then could be successfully offered for sale to the international market for recycling as required.
