Challenges

Working on the highway is a challenging environment with many hazards and associated risks. To mitigate these risks and ensure compliance with National Highways (formerly known as Highways England) guidance notes, all works are controlled under and delivered in line with client led safe systems of work for safe delivery of services. Our operatives are fully trained, with Street Works Qualifications Register (SWQR) and Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS) cards as a minimum. Site Supervisors hold the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) certificate. We also have all equipment and plant required for highway work such as coring rig, Stihl saws, wacker plates, temporary site lighting and generators. Our operatives also drive specialist highways sign written vans with Chapter 8 compliant markings and are equipped with high visibility flame retardant PPE for safe working on the highway.

The Solution

Non-intrusive surveys are delivered using desktop study of construction and repair records and drawings to identify known asbestos containing materials (ACMs) contained within the structure prior to attending site to verify and further the desktop findings. Intrusive works include coring of bridge decks to access waterproofing materials, trial pits to access drainage behind bridge abutments / revetments, confined access surveys of viaduct sections, pumping stations etc. and high level surveys of bridges to inspect bearing shelves, sacrificial shuttering etc.

Our Highways Surveyors are supported by specialist trained Civils Operatives who assist in traffic management and opening up so that areas can be accessed for inspection sampling. All intrusive work is reinstated to a highways compatible standard including waterproofing and motorway running lane surfacing.

We also provide several services to complement our surveying activities including coring of bridge decks to access waterproofing materials, trial pits to access drainage behind bridge abutments / revetments, confined access surveys of viaduct sections, pumping stations, and high level surveys of bridges to inspect bearing shelves, sacrificial shuttering etc. Through this approach we are able to deliver multiple solutions for our clients in an effective, safe and cost effective manner.
