CDM Principal Contractor Support

Lucion Services was appointed to provide Principal Contractor (PC) support services to one of the UKs leading construction and property management company for a multi-million pound construction project at a major business school in the North West of England.

The project involved the building of a brand new 19 storey hotel in a central campus location as well as an adjoining executive education centre to house the business school’s corporate leadership and management programmes.

The focus for our CDM Consultants was to provide best practice advice at pre-construction and construction phases to ensure compliance with the construction design and management (CDM) 2015 regulations.

Challenges

The site was a vacant site on an existing campus so much attention was paid to logistics and safety design. We attended regular meetings to review progress and ensure that our client discharged their duties as required.

The key challenge for us as a CDM Advisor to the PC was supporting them in managing dozens of subcontractors on site at any one time, ensuring they are aware of all health and safety procedures, complying with safe systems of works and maintaining a focus on near miss identification reporting in order to prevent serious accidents during the project.

The Solution

To ensure the construction work ran smoothly and safely, our CDM Consultants delivered a programme of site safety audits every two weeks to monitor safety on site and ensure that the contractors were complying with site safety procedures and regulatory guidance.

To deal with the many staff on site and to make sure they had all the relevant safety information, our consultants held regular health and safety meetings with the contractors to deliver the relevant information and highlight key safety issues relating to the construction work being undertaken and focusing on key hazards. We also implemented the set-up of a project safety forum where contractors had the opportunity to feedback to management on safety issues on-site and suggest ideas for improvement.
