Case Study
Europe’s Largest Grade 2 Listed Building

Working with a UK leading construction firm Kier, our Lucion Services team worked on the phase 3 refurbishment program of Europe’s largest listed building, Park Hill Flats located in Sheffield.

Kier’s project was to create a new cluster of flats, merging many of the existing dwellings together to create revitalised multi-story housing.

During the project we provided:

181
Flats Surveyed
62
Days of analytical services
13,000
Square Metre Refurbishment Scope
Challenges

The 181 flats, communal areas, and undercroft were in drastically poor condition, with many flats subject to vandalism and disrepair. A significant amount of asbestos was discovered throughout the site.

Due to the nature of the building, undercroft surveys and water sampling for bacterial hazardous substances were required. Our confined space trained teams were able to conduct the surveys safely with the employment of an additional confined space rescue team on standby.

Following the surveys, our team of BOHS qualified Asbestos Analysts supplied analytical attendance throughout the works 5 days a week throughout July and August 2019, then dropping down to 2 days a week until the works finished late November.

The Solution

During the contract, our team faced multiple unforeseen additions to the initial scope and adapted project works accordingly with support from our client Kier.

Additionally, a member of our Lucion Services team was awarded ‘Operative of the Month’ based on excellent QHSE performance by our client Kier Construction Northern.

As a collective group of suppliers, we can proudly say that the Park Hill project has rejuvenated a block of the iconic flats, restoring the Grade II-listed building for future generations and ensuring that Park Hill becomes a desirable place to live for people in Sheffield.
