IPHONE IOS 11 SOFTWARE UPDATE TO SUPPORT ASBESTOS LABELLING QR CODES

20 September 2017

Available as a free public software update on Tuesday, 19 September, the new iOS 11 software will feature a built-in QR Code scanner. Great news for Lucion customers, meaning quicker access to their Asbestos Labelling QR Codes.

What exactly is QR Code labelling for Asbestos Management?

The new asbestos warning label concept developed by safety and risk management specialists Lucion Services uses quick response (QR) codes to enable all pertinent information on the presence of any asbestos in a particular location to be made immediately available to whoever may need it.

The QR codes provide direct on-site access to the building’s digital site survey records incorporating full details of the condition of any ACMs present, access restrictions and other safeguards that are required for anyone who may need to carry out work in the vicinity.

The interactive system utilises special hardwearing and weatherproof labels that can be used for both indoor and outdoor locations, enabling their use on structures or other unmanned assets where available space might limit the use of on-site paper based information systems.

Connection to the Nexgen asbestos management portal via the QR label is password protected enabling access to the secure information to be fully controlled and restricted to authorised personnel only. The digital system also enables any subsequent updates from re-inspections or pre-refurbishment surveys to be easily added so that the building records are always up to date.

So how does the software update support this?

Up until now, iPhone users had the option of either accessing the QR Code scanner from the Wallet app or downloading a separate app to scan QR codes which may have prevented a barrier to access for some customers.

Apple isn’t the first to adopt a more streamlined way of accessing QR Code scanners in the last year; In December 2016, Samsung Internet 5.0 introduced an in-built QR code scanner into the web browser.

February of this year, Google also updated the Chrome web browser to support QR scanning on smartphones.

With QR code scanning becoming more accessible across smartphones, this is making it easier for customers and users of Asbestos labelling QR codes to access their data much quicker and with fewer barriers.

The new iOS 11 operating system will be released to the public as a free software update on Tuesday, 19 September.
