22 September 2020

National specialist resource centre for asbestos-related cancer, Mesothelioma UK, is hosting their free to attend 15th annual patient carer day on the 2nd October 2020, virtually, providing an invaluable platform for patients, carers, health care professionals, nurses and legal professionals to connect.

Mesothelioma UK is the leading national specialist resource centre for mesothelioma. Founded in 2004 with initial funding from Macmillan Cancer Support, the charity has been dedicated to providing information, support and improve treatment and care throughout the UK for mesothelioma sufferers and their carers. The charity, which became an independent charity in 2009, additionally delivers information and education to industry bodies nationwide, raising awareness about the dangers of asbestos and preventative measures that must be taken to protect individuals from deadly asbestos exposures.

According to Mesothelioma UK, the UK has the highest incidence of mesothelioma in the world with around 2,700 new diagnosis made per year, with projected future rises.

In September 2019, Mesothelioma UK and Lucion Services announced their charity partnership to help raise funds and awareness about the dangers of asbestos and resulting diseases from exposure.

Commercial Director and Charity Board Member Lucy Armstrong commented,

“Being able to support Mesothelioma UK in their plans to continue to deliver much needed support and services to patients and their carers during the COVID pandemic has been a privilege. During these uncertain times where face to face events and fundraisers are not feasible for many charities, and the economic climate is uncertain for many businesses and individuals, it is important that we continue to find ways to support this vital charity.”

The charity's future vision is to become the ‘Mesothelioma One Stop Shop’, encompassing its support services for sufferers, education of preventative measures for industries and help to encourage higher standards of treatment and care through the NHS. Their five year plan strategy (2016 - 2021) is ‘Dedicated To Making Mesothelioma Matter’.

Asbestos Is Schools White Paper

With widespread concern over the potentially harmful effects of asbestos in schools, modern air sampling and analytical techniques have the ability to better protect the health and safety of teachers and pupils. There is no safe limit of asbestos for people to breathe and we want everyone with a responsibility for safety in our schools to better understand the situation.

The white paper has been designed to provide important information to those who manage asbestos in buildings, in particular those who are responsible for the maintenance of the property and teachers.
