Lucion Marine Accelerates Expansion

25 August 2020

Lucion Marine, IHM and Hazardous Material Risk Management Specialists, welcomes Jon Chaplin as Business Development Manager.

Lucion Marine remains a strategic growth area for Lucion Services and we are delighted to announce the appointment of Jon Chaplin, Business Development Manager.

Jon brings the experience of marine business development from a range of products and services and is known and respected in senior maritime circles.

He is an accomplished operator in maritime media, with commercial, editorial and management experience. Leading the sales of TradeWinds between 1995 – 2006 Jon helped to establish it as the world’s best-read shipping news service during which time he developed and implemented an income-resilient, subscription-based paywall strategy during the transition of media to the internet.

In 2004, recognising the commercial potential from China, Jon initiated and developed a growing and financially successful conference business unit, producing well-attended events from Shanghai to New York, Singapore to Athens, Copenhagen to Bermuda. Alongside the high-profile Shipowner Forums, he directed and chaired the Ship Recycling Forum which over a period of 10 years, played a pivotal role in improving shipbreaking practices on the Indian subcontinent, bringing together for the first time, key figures from Commerce and Regulation.

In 2018, Jon branched out as Director, Executive Search for a specialist maritime recruitment firm and worked with leading shipowners, ship managers, Class Societies and Industry Associations to identify and hire top talent mostly at board level.

An ongoing affinity for the ship recycling industry, combined with commercial opportunities arising from the EU Ship Recycling Regulation took Jon back to the world of materials testing in November 2019 with a move to maritime technical consultancy based an hour south of Hamburg. There he formalised his IHM Expert training with Class Society RINA and handled operations for the major client as well as undertaking several IHM inspections personally.

In August 2020, Jon returned to the UK to work for Lucion Marine.

Speaking about his appointment, Jon commented;

“It is an interesting and exciting time to be joining the marine team at Lucion.

The health, safety and environmental impact of poor recycling practices are now clear for all to see. I'm looking forward to joining Lucion on its mission to build a safer and more environmentally sound industry through delivering trusted hazardous material management services.

If you're looking for assistance in understanding regulation changes and want to achieve compliance and improve your operating efficiencies, get in touch."

Marine Services Director, Kevan O’Neill commented on the recent appointment;

Our business has never been busier. As a known trusted provider of hazardous material management services, it is important to us to bring in our newest member Jon, someone whose reputation is well known and can be trusted to guide our team into new markets and expand our current market share.”
