Why do I need Retained Safety Services?

There are numerous national and international Health and Safety laws that companies are required to comply with in order to perform the responsibilities inherent in their jobs. To ensure compliance, clients must make certain that their supply chain has suitable management systems in place to know, abide by and monitor  compliance. Often a supply chain review is the answer.

When companies employ a subcontractor to carry out work on their behalf at either premises or those of a customer, you have a duty under UK health and safety legislation to ensure they hold the relevant skills, knowledge, experience and training to perform the task they are being engaged to perform.

Additionally subcontractors need to demonstrate they are adequately resourced for the task you have employed them to do.

What is included in a Subcontractor Assessment?

This evaluation follows the general guidance of accreditation bodies such as CHAS and includes:

  • Assessment of subcontractor company policy documentation
  • Review and gap analysis of training records and requirements
  • Insurances check
  • Assessment and audit of subcontractor safety systems

The Subcontractor Assessment not only ensures legal compliance but gives the opportunity to check the subcontractor meets your expectations.

What are my responsibilities?

According to the HSE Brief Guide: Using Contractors (INDG368) both the client, duty holder, or employer  and the contractor have responsibilities under health and safety law.

Everyone needs to take the right precautions to reduce the risks of workplace dangers to employees and the public. It is the duty of the subcontractor employer to ensure that their supply chain members are compliant and competent to fulfil the roles assigned to them for the duration of their employment.
